week one
First week's lecture talked about the history and prevalence of visual design in the world, starting from the beginning of civilisation until now. I got to know about the difference between logos and symbols. the concept of global design is exceptionally exciting to me because it mentioned Apple having a very coherent global design, which is a minimalistic look. Being the owner of a few Apple products, it was something I could really relate and appreciate.
Our first task was to come up with a device or machine that could enhance our creativity. I began to write down some words that came to my mind, as seen in the photo below. Without hesitation, I knew that my device had to have a teleportation function of some sort, because I feel that seeing more of the world allows me to have a broader perspective. I always remember seeing telephone booths being teleportation devices, so that's what I drew.

Speaking of perspectives, what if I could shrink with the press of a button? Go into cells to look at how intricate these little things are at the click of a button. After all, nature is beautiful and if we can look at it from all perspectives, even down to the atomic and molecular levels, that would give us so much more inspiration.

Being involved in multiple activities, I constantly have a lot of things on my to-do list, and sometimes I find it difficult to generate ideas because of my cluttered mind. Wouldn't idea generation be so much easier without all these things on my to-do list? I could have minions helping me complete these tasks and I would have more space in my mind to explore more ideas.

I am someone who values personal space and alone time very much, and thus I do things best when I am alone. This also extends to times when I need to be creative and think of ideas - I can't do it when there are a lot of external distractions. Thus, a bubble that separates me from the rest of the world would be perfect to help me settle down and generate ideas.

Memories also play a big part in creativity in my opinion, because we base our ideas off of things that we have seen before. If we had more memory space, we could remember more things and have a greater pool of ideas to pick from.

go back to month by month?
Presenting, the Space Manipulator 1.0! This device is in the shape of a typical London phone booth, which is a disguise for a teleportation machine. It has 4 functions, namely TIME TRAVEL & TELEPORTATION, BUBBLE MAKER, USB MEMORY STORAGE, & TASK DELETER.

TIME TRAVEL AND TELEPORTATION brings you to any space and time I'd like to be at, to allow me to explore different ways that people did things, in a different time or place. This is activated by a phone, where the coordinates of the place I want to go to can be keyed in, along with the year. This will then transport me to wherever I want to be.

BUBBLE MAKER is a personal space bubble blower at the base of the booth that helps me to block out any external distractions that may cause decreased creativity. It is in a way, a boost of focus and allows me to let my creativity juices flow with ease.

USB MEMORY STORAGE is a port that lets me store all my memories in this booth, so that in the future, I can refer to them and find inspiration in the things that I've seen and experienced.

TASK DELETER works by ticking things off my to-do list, so that I can have a less cluttered mind, and have greater freedom for creativity. Once the to-do list is clipped, the minions will process my tasks and start to help me complete banal everyday tasks, thus giving me more time to be creative.
week two
constructive critique
august
Second lecture explores the usage of research journals. It is something used to document the thought process of the artist, and it is said that a lot more can be understood from the process behind the art, than just the art itself. This week, we were tasked to critique a piece of art of our choice.
I typed Singaporean Artists in the search bar, and found an interesting art piece titled Journey Of A Yellow Man, by Lee Wen. Upon further research, I found out that it is actually a performance art piece, but this photo is a documentation of a few of the scenes performed by Lee Wen.

this artwork by Lee Wen, a Singaporean artist, explores social identity of Asians born out of Mainland China. He had many anxieties as a Singaporean Chinese living in London, where people often mistook him as a Mainland Chinese. He always felt like he wasn't adequate enough of a Chinese because he couldn't speak Mandarin as well as the Mainland Chinese, and they kept asking him why he could speak English so fluently. Then, he came to a realisation that he had many Singaporean quirks that separates him from the Mainland Chinese.

This artwork is actually not originally meant to be two-dimensional, this is merely a documentation of his 20 minute performance art which was held at the City of London Polytechnic. Even though he could choose to express such feelings in 2D form, he chose to create a performance art because he felt that Singapore was over-representing typical ink and watercolour artists, and excluding more experimental and unorthodox artists that dabble in installations and performance art. He expressed such disdain for the unequal treatment at the start of his performance art piece.

He painted himself yellow to emphasise on his Asian roots, and washed off the yellow at the end of the piece by immersing himself in a bathtub to signify his wishes and wants for yellow to not be the first thing that people notice about him.
In the third week, we look at composition and effective design in our everyday lives. First, we talked about Fibonacci Numbers, that can be observed in rabbits mating. The first few numbers of the Fibonacci sequence are as such: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21... Divide each number in the series by the one that precedes it, and you get a ratio that stabilises at 1.618034. This is phi and it is the golden number! The Fibonacci sequence can also be found in the number of petals. Lilies have 3 petals, buttercups have 5, marigolds have 13, and daisies can have either 34, 55 or 89 petals!

The Golden Ratio is where the ratio of the whole to the larger portion is the same as the ratio of the larger to the smaller portion, as shown in the photo on the left:

composition and effective design

You can also find the Fibonacci Numbers in our body! We have 2 hands, 5 fingers, and 3 segments separated by 2 knuckles in each finger. Next is the Golden Rectangle. It is illustrated by the photo above, on the right. It is the most visually appealing/satisfying of all art forms. It can be observed in the Mona Lisa as well as an unsuspecting special guest.
Rule of Thirds produces a pleasing, balanced arrangement to any composition. This is merely a guideline, but not a rule! This shot from the popular American TV show The Office, uses this as well, to keep the shot interesting and not too flat as compared to when he is smack right in the middle.
Subject Composition:
1. Long shot - shows the entire character in the frame, introduces a new storyline.
2. Mid shot - cuts the character off at the waist, and emphasises on his actions. To introduce people to the character.
3. Close up shots - From the chest up, to show emotion, focuses on emotion, and tries to establish a relationship between the viewer and the character. In this shot, we see filmmaker Sergio Leone showing off Hugh Jackman's squinty eyes in a very up close and personal fashion.
This is a good summary of all the shots we have just mentioned, with attention paid to the rule of thirds:
